Who supplies Detroit Metro water

The Great Lakes Water Authority is a regional water and wastewater utility formed in 2015 from the assets of the former Detroit Water and Sewerage Department regional system. GLWA operates four water treatment plants along the Detroit River and Lake Huron, collectively producing up to 600 million gallons per day. Treated water moves through transmission mains to DWSD and to more than 120 wholesale customers across Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and adjacent counties.

Inside the city limits, DWSD takes delivery of GLWA-treated water and distributes it through a network of local mains. The two-tier structure means there are two annual water quality reports worth reading: the DWSD Water Quality Report (detroitmi.gov) for city distribution, and the GLWA Water Quality Report (glwater.org) for the regional treatment picture. Suburban customers in Oakland and Macomb counties receive the same GLWA-treated water but through their own distribution utilities.

Source water is Detroit River and Lake St. Clair, both surface-water sources subject to seasonal variation in organic loading, agricultural runoff, and industrial discharge from the upper Great Lakes watershed. That figure is sourced from the GLWA distribution system; individual neighborhoods and suburban utilities within the GLWA service area can vary slightly based on blending and local distribution conditions.

While 10 to 13 GPG sounds modest compared to the 16 to 21 GPG common across central Indiana, it still crosses the threshold where hardness becomes a real maintenance issue. Water heater scale accumulates meaningfully above 8 GPG, dishwashers and washing machines accumulate limescale on heating elements and drum seals, and fixtures develop visible white deposits over months. Lead in Metro Detroit: what the 25-community finding means for your home

Lead in drinking water is the highest-priority water quality concern for Detroit Metro homeowners in older housing stock. The source is not the treatment plant. GLWA finished water is treated for corrosion control and contains no meaningful lead as it leaves the plant. The problem is the last mile: service lines, interior plumbing, and fixtures installed before Congress banned lead solder in 1986.

Run the cold tap for 30 seconds before drawing water for drinking or cooking, especially after the tap has been idle overnight or for several hours. Is there PFAS in Detroit Metro tap water?

The practical point for Detroit Metro homeowners on municipal water: PFAS was not detected in the most recent comprehensive monitoring round. Chlorine, TTHMs, and disinfection byproducts in Detroit

GLWA uses free chlorine as its primary disinfectant across all four treatment plants. Surface water from the Detroit River carries higher organic loading than many groundwater sources, particularly during summer months when algae and decomposing plant matter increase the amount of organic carbon in the raw water. Chlorine reacts with those organics to form disinfection byproducts, primarily total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) and haloacetic acids (HAA5).

The EPA's maximum contaminant level for TTHMs is 80 ppb as a running annual average, and 60 ppb for HAA5. GLWA and DWSD have historically maintained compliance with both limits. The concern is not violation; it is that seasonal spikes in late summer can push running averages higher than winter readings, and some households prefer not to consume even compliant levels of TTHMs in their drinking water. How Detroit Metro water compares to the rest of our service area

How to read the DWSD and GLWA water quality reports

Every year, DWSD publishes a Water Quality Report in the spring covering the prior calendar year. GLWA publishes its own report on roughly the same schedule. Both are available free at their respective websites and cover every regulated contaminant detected, the measured level, the regulatory limit, and any monitoring violations.

When reading either report, focus on two things: the highest level detected during the year (not just the annual average), and whether any monitoring violations occurred. For TTHMs and HAA5, the reports typically show a running annual average; look for whether any quarterly measurement came close to the MCL even if the annual average is well below it. For lead, look at the 90th percentile result from the sampling program. That figure represents what the higher-lead homes in the tested sample are seeing. What utility reports cannot tell you is what is happening at your specific tap. Utility samples are taken at a rotating set of monitored sites, not every home. Pre-1986 homes with original plumbing should not rely on utility averages as proof of safety at the kitchen tap.
