What Michigan's PFAS Monitoring Data Shows in 2026

No other state has invested more in PFAS detection than Michigan. Military base contamination at Camp Grayling, Wurtsmith Air Force Base, and Selfridge Air National Guard Base spread PFAS through surrounding groundwater and surface water for decades before testing began. The resulting statewide contamination map is the most detailed in the country (Michigan EGLE PFAS Response).

In 2020, Michigan became the first state to adopt enforceable MCLs for seven PFAS compounds, setting separate limits for PFNA (6 ppt), PFHxS (51 ppt), PFBS (420 ppt), HFPO-DA or GenX (370 ppt), PFOA (8 ppt), PFOS (16 ppt), and PFHxA (400,000 ppt). This came years before the federal EPA finalized its own MCLs for PFOA and PFOS at 4 ppt each in April 2024. The EPA's Fifth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR5) required public water systems serving more than 3,300 people to sample for 29 PFAS compounds from 2023 to 2025, producing the most comprehensive national dataset on PFAS in drinking water to date (EPA UCMR5 occurrence data). Grand Rapids: Lake Michigan Water and Why Surface Source Matters

Where Grand Rapids differs from its neighbors is hardness. At approximately 8 GPG, Lake Michigan water is moderately soft compared to the 15 to 22 GPG ranges common in Jackson and Kalamazoo county groundwater systems. Ann Arbor's drinking water comes from the Huron River, a surface source with a documented PFAS contamination history tied to industrial activity upstream of the intake. PFOA and PFOS from manufacturing sites in the watershed reached the Huron River over many years, resulting in detectable concentrations that have required the city to upgrade its treatment process.

Ann Arbor's 2024 Consumer Confidence Report and EPA UCMR5 data show PFOA and PFOS detections in source water, with treated finished water below the federal 4 ppt MCLs for both compounds. The city uses granular activated carbon and additional treatment steps to meet the new federal limits. Hardness in Ann Arbor runs approximately 8 to 10 GPG, similar to Grand Rapids.

Detroit Metro: 3.9 Million Served, Two Sources, What the CCR Shows

The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department is one of the largest water utilities in the country, serving approximately 3.9 million people across southeastern Michigan through the Great Lakes Water Authority regional system. Two treatment plants handle the load: the Perrine Road Water Treatment Plant draws from Lake Huron via a 69-mile intake tunnel, and the Springwells Water Treatment Plant draws from Lake St. Clair.

Both Great Lakes sources carry low PFAS concentrations compared to the groundwater plumes near Michigan's contaminated military sites. Detroit's 2023 Consumer Confidence Report confirmed no PFAS detected above federal maximum contaminant limits in distributed water (DWSD water quality reports). Lake St. Clair, which is shallower and more affected by local tributaries than Lake Huron, has historically received scrutiny for industrial inputs, but PFAS levels in treated distributed water have remained below MCLs.

Jackson, MI: Groundwater, Industrial History, and What EGLE Has Found

Jackson draws its municipal water from a network of 16 deep groundwater wells sunk more than 400 feet into glacial aquifers, making it fundamentally different from the three Great Lakes surface-water systems described above. Groundwater is more vulnerable to localized industrial contamination because aquifer plumes do not dilute the way lakes and rivers do.

The Leoni Township and Blackman Township areas south and east of Jackson have documented industrial contamination histories. EGLE has conducted PFAS testing in the greater Jackson area as part of its statewide monitoring program. The city's most recent public reporting shows no PFAS detections above federal reporting limits in municipal well sampling, and the EGLE PFAS site list identifies affected sites separately from public water system results.

Water hardness in Jackson runs approximately 15 to 20 GPG from the glacial aquifer, similar to the harder groundwater systems in southern Indiana. This is meaningfully different from Grand Rapids or Detroit Metro and affects treatment recommendations significantly. What to Do: Reverse Osmosis for PFAS, Softener for Hardness, Michigan-Specific Advice

The right treatment stack for a Michigan home depends on which city you are in, whether your supply is municipal or private well, and what you are treating for. PFAS and hardness require different technologies, and the sizing differs materially across the four service areas.

For PFAS: an NSF/ANSI 58 certified reverse osmosis system at the kitchen tap reduces PFOA and PFOS by more than 90 percent, according to NSF International testing data. RO is effective for Ann Arbor homeowners who want a point-of-use barrier beyond the city's treatment plant, and it is the standard recommendation for any household in a PFAS-affected area regardless of whether the utility water currently meets the MCL.
